In the game World of Warcraft there is a place that certain teams can go to face other teams to see who has the better build and/or skill. This is also a way to gain bigger, better rewards as well to test your own skill as a team player and how well you and your teammates adapt to each other in the midst of battle. In this event players may join up with other players to create a team of 2, 3 or 5 players to participate. Any player of the same level group can do this. Meaning players of levels, for example, 20-29 or 50-59 or 60-69 may be in the same Arena team.
Players need to learn from experience and from others about how to make the best group combination. As players defeat others in the Arena, they gain an Arena Score. Some things you can eventually get for doing these Arenas require a certain Arena Score to use or purchase these items. The higher the score, the better the items. It also gives players a little bragging rights over his/her friends, ha ha.
Many items are best suited for PvP, or Player vs. Player, and other items you will find are better set towards instances. For example, mage PvP gear grants a lot more health to the player rather than an enormous amount of mana. Sets that are more useful in instances give a just amount of health but is much lower than the PvP gear, but they grant the player a massive amount of mana. This is because in PvP you need to take hits so you will survive longer. The fights in PvP are fast and require health because you will be struck a lot. In instances, the boss battles can take anywhere from a few seconds to up to an hour. As you can guess for a mage, that could take a drastic affect on the amount of mana he/she would use in the one battle. So instance sets give a massive amount of mana so the mage can last longer in the fight. And as the class changes so does the armor specs.
This event that Blizzard has come up with is not only "just another Player vs. Player thing", but a new way to challenge the World of Warcraft community. They created a new way to test the team-work of the players, and how well they will adapt to other players' attack patterns, how they plan to take who out first, and also how well their plans and attack patterns are adaptable to. Players will learn from mistakes many times, and will learn what statistics of armor sets, enchants, and talent point set ups work the best for such classes and roles. So Blizzard also uses this to test knowledge and to make players think and test out different things.
