Age of Conan: Censoring the Good Stuff

Some game creators have been known to push the boundaries of what is acceptable and what isn't in a game. Opinions on this matter differ on a global scale; some are similar and some are different. With Age of Conan, this debate is also happening. There are discussions about the gore and nudity that takes part in Age of Conan, some people believe gore or nudity should not be allowed. As a result of this, a country has decided to have a censored game to their liking.

Germany has made a decision that they will not allow Age of Conan to be sold in their country unless there is some sort of censor on it. The issue that Germany has with AoC is the amount of blood, gore, and hardcore violence the game displays. Where as the U.S. has more of an issue with nudity, Germany is pretty much the opposite with their anti-gore stance. Germany sees nudity as more natural than violence and gore, so they choose not to promote it; however, it is uncertain as to whether that is the solid reason. There is no doubt though that some AoC games will be bought by Germans, but not in Germany.

With the news about Germany not receiving the full blown game, rumors have spread about the U.S.'s stance on censoring the game. People had been told that the U.S. was thinking about censoring the nudity that comes with the game. There is a list of other games that Americans play that have nudity in them, but they have a mature rating on them, so to many people that thought did not make sense. Funcom announced that the U.S. will have a non-censored game, dispelling the rumors. Americans will have the ability to play the game to its full potential.

As long as people think differently about what we should and shouldn't be allowed to see in a game, adjustments are going to be made to fit all comfort levels. Age of Conan has already taken it's part in this debate, and are making the necessary changes to fit the different positions. While some may agree or disagree with this action, people will still be able to play Age of Conan for the major aspects that gamers look at in a game. These adjustments are needed to keep the players happy and to keep people playing in the first place. Seeing as the game content in question has only a minor role in the game, it was a wise choice of AoC to censor these details so all people are able to play on a comfortable level.
